About the Study
  • There is a well-documented worldwide shortage of optometrists, which hampers global efforts to manage the burden of preventable vision impairment.
  • To effectively advocate for the profession we need a clear and comprehensive understanding of the current state of optometric education.
  • This landmark study aims to create a comprehensive map of optometric education through a global survey. This will be an invaluable, open-access resource for policymakers, academic institutions, and professional bodies worldwide.

What We Hope to Achieve
The primary goals of this study are to:
Create a Global Map
Develop a comprehensive database of every optometry training institution worldwide.
Identify Strengths & Gaps
Analyze and understand the disparities in curriculum, faculty resources, clinical training, and regulatory frameworks across different regions.
Empower Advocacy & Policy
Provide robust, evidence-based data for increased investment, updated legislation, and the integration of optometry into public health systems.
Foster Collaboration
Build a global network of optometric educators who can share best practices and work together to strengthen the profession.
Key Informant Role and Benefits
A Key Informant is the one designated representative from each participating educational institution. This role is a unique opportunity to contribute to a global dataset that will shape the future of optometric education. The responsibilities include:
  • Providing Data: To complete the survey with information that is as accurate and comprehensive as possible.
  • Timely Submission: To complete and return the survey within a specified four-week timeframe, or to communicate in advance if an extension is required.

In recognition of this valuable contribution, every Key Informants who submits a complete survey will be formally acknowledged as a coauthor by being part of the "GOPHA Optometry Educators Research Group" in the main global publication. You may also be invited to collaborate on future papers or case studies relevant to your country and region.
